Afternoon tea // Macdonald Burlington Hotel

If you know me well, you'll know that not only do I really love my food but that one of my favourite meals is afternoon tea. So, when I was given the chance to visit the Macdonalds Burlington Hotel in Birmingham to try theirs, there was no way I could say no (especially as I could invite my mum to join me as an early Mother's Day treat!).

The Burlington Hotel is a beautiful and historic building set above the Burlington Arcade right in the centre of Birmingham. Walking out of New Street station, it's pretty much next door.

Served in the Burlington Lounge, the afternoon tea was beautifully presented on a three tier stand with matching china tea cups. There was a selection of finger sandwiches, with fillings that include ham, salmon, turkey, tuna and cucumber on white and brown bread as well as scones with plenty of jam and cream. But I really must mention the generous selection of five different cakes including chocolate brownies, lemon cheesecake, millefeuille, Bakewell Tart and Victoria sponge. You are also offered unlimited tea and coffee of your choice. The tea menu was extensive and included options such as Earl Grey, Camomile, Mint and so much more. We chose the Elderflower & Blossom (a delightfully fragrant brew) and  Superfruit (sumptuous red berries). You can also make your afternoon tea sparkling for just £8 extra.

Overall, I was extremely impressed with the afternoon tea at the Burlington Hotel. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial. The food was well presented, delicious and so plentiful that we cheekily asked if some of the cake selection could be wrapped to take home! The hotel staff, Alexandro and Ruslan, were extremely attentive, positively charming and helpful, and nothing was too much trouble. This outing proved a real treat after a day's shopping.

Afternoon tea is served between 12 noon and 6 pm every day and costs £17.95 pp. Booking is advised.
